Have you heard the proverb, “Eat breakfast like a King, lunch like a Prince, and dinner like a pauper”? Another version goes like this: “Eat your breakfast, share your lunch with a friend, and give your dinner to your enemy”. Whichever way you look at it, the conclusion is the same – breakfast is the most important meal of the day!
The word breakfast is just that…breaking the fast after a night’s rest, and it is important to fuel our brains and bodies for the day. Breakfast provides us with many health benefits and breakfast foods are a great source of nutrients such as fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals.
Breakfast restores one’s glucose levels, which provides us with physical energy, but also maximises brain function. Studies show that eating breakfast improves concentration levels and memory and can lower stress levels and improve mood.
Breakfast is great for those trying to lose weight, as you are less likely to have sugary food cravings if you have consumed a healthy breakfast that is high in nutrients.
It is important to eat breakfast within the first 2-3 hours of waking up, in order to power your day and gain the nutritional benefits. Some of us struggle to eat breakfast first thing in the morning, but there is no harm in eating your brekkie on-the-go or when you get to your destination. Something small and nutritious is better than nothing at all.
As well as going without food all night, one must also remember that the body has gone without liquid. Dehydration can cause headaches, fatigue and irritability. We often mistake dehydration for hunger, resulting in overeating, but rather start your day with a glass of water, and have a second drink of watered-down fruit juice or herbal tea at breakfast.
Taking a few minutes to eat a nutritional breakfast can really make a difference to your day, both physically and mentally, so do make sure that you take some time out of your busy morning and tuck in to something tasty!
